“Jazz on a Summer’s Day” is the name of the classic concert film shot at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival. It’s also an apt description of Sunday afternoon’s concert by the Big Band Jazz Machine at the Handlery Hotel’s Terrace Garden in Mission Valley.

The award-winning ensemble has been led since its inception in 1979 by baritone saxophonist Ira. B. Liss. His tireless dedication to music and to his labor-of-love band surely is worthy of several civic awards.

Under Liss’ guidance, the Big Band Jazz Machine has recorded several albums and performed across the county. It has also nurtured and showcased an array of young and veteran San Diego musicians, including pianist Chase Morrin, who performs here Aug. 3 at Dizzy’s.

If you can’t make today’s concert, the Big Band Jazz Machine also performs Aug. 27 at Bernardo Winery with guest singer Slim Man.
